Basquiat

This was a movie about an expressionist artist who painted graffiti and used the streets to show his work then later, when discovered, became famous for it.
The movie was in my opinion eerie in a way that it made me feel lost. Basquait, the main character was a druggy but for some reason it suited the way he was shown. I felt he was shown as a guy who didn't care what people thought of what he looked like in most cases because everyone knew the gist of his situation- so why try to hide it. His lack of self consciousness was shown in what he wore ie. a robe most times, very baggy clothes reflecting and emphasizing what he was doing recently. His clothes would be ratty, old looking- like it was scrounged from a clothing bin. He would be wearing old sandals worn mostly to the soles. His hair was a mass of messy dreads. Almost everything he wore contrasted vastly to everyone around him in a way that almost made him more approachable. To me it was like he was saying "this is me in all my glory, deal with it"
I felt he was portrayed as a bit of a promiscuous figure, which was shown by his attraction to people that I think stood out in a particular scene. The girl that he found an interest in (Gina I think her name was) stood out to him in a local dinner by what she was wearing. She was wearing a bright red coat (which I secretly coveted). She was quite pretty too. There was a moment in the movie where there was a raunchy, trashy dressed women who wore bright short clothing to show off her "Attributes". This was a scene that was quite defining to me because it showed how un- loyal and flighty Basquiat could be.
When I watched the movie, I didn't so much look at the clothing but rather how the clothing on a particular character had set them apart from the rest of the cast.
